Why Update PCs
Proper updates are an important part of good performance on a PC. Updates improve your PC's performance and capabilities in several ways. Here are the basics of why we update, as well as how to go about it.
Updates keep your programs and drivers, literally, up to date. This means that if problems have arisen with the program, the manufacturer will create an update that solves the problem so the program runs better. Updates help your programs and drivers communicate better with one another and with your system as a whole.
Updates also patch any security problems that may arise. If it becomes apparent that users are receiving viruses, adware, or malware because of the coding for any program, an update can fix that loophole and protect your entire PC from further infestation.
Because of this, it is highly important to update regularly, but it is also important to know what you are updating. One of the easiest ways to update is to select an "automatic update" preference whenever it is available for a program. When you connect to the internet, that program will speak with the manufacturer's site to see if an update is available. You can choose your settings to update automatically, or to ask you if you would like to load an update when it becomes available.
The other way to go about updates is to check manually, just to make sure. You can do this by checking the support sites for specific manufacturers, or driver sites if it is a driver rather than an application that you are seeking to update.
Some updates, particularly automatic updates, will try to install a group of updates at the same time, particularly when one manufacturer runs multiple major programs or applications on your PC. When this happens, check just to make sure that everything you are downloading looks legitimate. Some companies will try to sneak you into downloading a new application that you neither need nor want. So look carefully, and make sure you are updating regularly to achieve optimum safety and performance on your PC.
