Official Safe Mode

Free Download: Safe Mode

Windows Safe Mode is a mode of operation that you can use to fix problems with drivers or address errors that have arisen (such as viruses, improper shut downs, and others). Safe Mode essentially runs just the basics that you will need to operate your system. This means that any tainted or problematic files will likely not be active, so you can address them without having them running improperly first.

Booting into Safe Mode on a PC is a relatively easy process. There are four simple steps that you must take to boot your PC into Windows Safe Mode.

1.      Turn off your computer, or restart it in order to boot into safe mode. Before the splash screen with the Windows XP logo appears, press the F8 key. This takes you to the "Windows Advanced Options" menu. If the menu does not appear, you did not hit F8 soon enough. Restart and try again.

2.      For most purposes, you will select the first choice of the three that open in the new menu, regular "Safe Mode." Use the keyboard to select the option you want and hit the return key.

3.      A dialogue box will appear to make sure you want to enter operating in Windows Safe Mode. Simply click the "yes" button and you will boot up accordingly.

4.      You are now in Windows Safe Mode. You will be able to tell because the desktop of your PC will display "Safe Mode" in each of the four corners of the screen. When you are in Safe Mode, make any changes to drivers or programs that you need to make.

5.      When you are done, reboot the computer. It should boot automatically into regular performance Windows XP just like normal. The changes you made should have taken affect. If they do not, consult your instructions for the work you were trying to complete and seek assistance or try again using the same steps.
