Remove Virus

Free Download: Remove Virus

When your PC is infected with a virus, it can be difficult to know what to do to address the issue. Each virus is different, causing slightly different damage and requiring different steps to remove it completely. If it has gone too far, you may need professional assistance to reach deep to the base of your operating system.

However, there are a few precautions that can put you in good position to remove a virus from your PC effectively on your own. To remove a virus from your PC, it is a good idea to have an anti-virus CD on hand ahead of time. Make a CD with several removal tools (there are many free anti-virus tools available) as well as rootkit detectors. These will help the software identify not only the problem, but the location from which it is spreading.

Some viruses work by taking advantage of your computer's autorun feature, which automatically plays CDs and other media that are inserted into your computer.  You will need to turn this feature off before running antivirus software to eliminate the virus.

Other viruses take advantage of the system restore feature found in both Windows XP and Windows ME. System restore sets rollback points by backing up the status of your PC whenever a major change (such as new hardware) occurs. Unfortunately, it saves viruses as well, so you need to 'unsave' viruses when a rollback point is set. To remove viruses from your restore files, first turn off system restore by clicking Start > Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > System. Turn off system restore, scan your computer for viruses like normal, and then turn system restore back on.

Remember that when you are scanning for viruses, to do so while not connected to the internet. Internet connection allows viruses to communicate with external files, back themselves up, or bring in further infection. The best way to keep viruses away in the first place, though, is to have good anti-virus software and keep it up to date.
