Keeping PCs Cool
Sometimes, people forget that a PC is actually a machine. Machines have working, moving parts; they use electricity and can warm up the longer they are left on. Letting your PC overheat can cause serious damage to your computer's components, so keeping a PC cool is of the utmost importance. Follow the tips below to minimize the chances of your PC overheating and to take better care of your equipment overall.
1. The number one way of keeping your PC cool is to allow it plenty of air flow. This is the easiest cooling precaution you can take, so it will get the most attention here. PCs come equipped with fans that are designed to push the warm air out and keep the computer's components cool. If the fan is obstructed, such as if the computer tower is pushed up against a wall, this can prevent the hot air from escaping out the back. If something is against the side or front of the computer, this can prevent cool air from entering from these directions.
2. Keep your computer clean. Ceiling fans and oscillating fans you use to cool your home collect dust and particles on their blades; PC fans are no different. The fans in your PC will work better if you clean them periodically. To do this, simply open the case and spray the fan with a can of compressed air. Preventative cleaning includes vacuuming regularly in the room where your PC is kept.
3. Keep your PC case closed. Some people think that opening the case allows for more air flow. While this does make sense, it also exposes the internal components to dust and debris at a much greater rate than when the case is closed. The case and fans are there for a reason; keep your possessions clean and each will do their job, allowing your PC to keep cool and running safely.
