How To Backup Data

Free Download: How To Backup Data

Everyone has heard the advice to back up the data on their PC. But until something goes wrong and they lose information, many people do not heed the advice they have been given. Sometimes, data and programs can be recovered, but other times, it cannot. Rather than run the risk of losing your favorite photos, programs, documents and settings, back them all up ahead of time so that even if you and your PC need to start from scratch, you have your personal files without incurring any loss.

To backup data, you can use backup software that comes with your Windows program. In Windows XP Home, this software is included but not automatically installed. This backup wizard is similar to many independent software programs (some free, some not free) that can schedule backups on a regular basis. This way,  you do not have to worry about remembering backups, but rather they will be executed automatically.

Most of these programs will let you select which files and settings you would like to have backed up. If you are unsure as to whether something should be backed up or not, it is better to be safe than sorry. It is a good idea to get a PC backup program that has much more space than the data you are backing up; this way there is room for growth, and you can keep everything so that you are missing nothing later.

Where you store the backed up information depends on your preference. The data can be saved straight to your hard drive. If you are part of a network, you can save the data there for easy access from another computer. You can also purchase a zip driver or external hard disc drive. With data automatically saved to these locations, you can rest assured that your files and settings will be safe, even if something unexpected interrupts your PC's performance and you have to start over from scratch.
