Recognizing and Repairing Common Windows Errors
The number of Windows error messages that are possible is almost as great as the number of miniscule components that work together, allowing Windows to operate. While many of these errors are complex and can occur for several reasons, it is still instructive to provide an initial approach to some of the more common errors. Here are three of the most common Windows errors and what you might be able to do to fix them:
1. DLL errors (error messages referring to missing/broken/corrupt DLL files, which help software programs do what they need to within the operating system). If you receive a DLL error message, try restarting your computer. Identify the software program or hardware device that tends to trigger the error. Uninstall and reinstall the program, or make sure that the device's driver is up to date. Run a virus scan. You can also set the system to a restore point before the error occurred.
2. VxD errors (error messages caused by problems between Windows and your hardware on a deeper level). Try booting up in safe mode and accessing the Event Viewer (in Administrative Tools within the Control Panel) to see if the problem is logged. Otherwise, check for registry errors, run virus scan to check for malware, and make sure your drivers are up to date and your hardware is working properly.
3. Stop Errors (errors which occur at any point during the use of your computer that stop your PC from functioning properly). These can be caused by a number of things. Make sure your device drivers are up to date and that your hardware devices are not overheating and are working properly. Check that your software programs have the appropriate recent updates, and clear out your hard disk of any files and programs that you do not need. Running a virus scan may help as well.
