Overclocking PC and Video Cards

Overclocking is a term that refers to changing the way a computer component functions, allowing it to perform at a higher speed (or clock rate) than it was intended to by the manufacturer. Overclocking is very popular among online gamers, as overclocking such components as video cards can allow the computer to perform better without having to buy components that are newer, faster, or more expensive. However, it does come with some risks, so check out the list of pros and cons below. How Overclocking Works When a video card is made, the manufacturer sets it to run at a safe speed, which is determined by the quality yield of the cores that make up the center of the card. Manufacturers will set the clock rate (number of clock cycles per second) where they believe yields the best performance relative to heat and safety considerations. Often, this is only 70 or 80 percent of what the card could be doing. This means that the card has the capability to run 30 percent faster without augmenting its internal components; you just need to get inside and change the default factory settings. Pros to Overclocking PC and Video Cards * Achieve higher performance without having to upgrade to newer and more expensive components * Get faster performance for games, video editing, etc. * A good way to learn more about how your computer works (effective hobby to learn) Cons to Overclocking PC and Video Cards * Overclocking creates more heat, which can damage the component or surrounding parts or even cause fire. Requires extensive cooling measures such as high power fans, water cooling systems, or heat sinks. * The overclocking plus heating systems use more electricity to operate. * The component is not intended by the manufacturer to run at the higher speed. Forcing it to may disrupt the functional stability of the component. You may lose data or shorten the lifespan of the warranty. * Overclocking a PC or Video Card may void the warranty of that card.
