IP Conflicts and How To Resolve Them

If you are trying to connect to the internet in your home and receive an error message, you may be experiencing an IP conflict. Most often, this error message will refer to the IP address or to an IP conflict. This is a simple problem that can usually be fixed quite easily. The IP address is a specific number given to each machine using a network. It serves as a numerical way of locating each computer and identifying its behavior as specific to that PC. IP addresses are assigned in one of two ways: statically or dynamically. A static IP address means that your internet service provider (ISP) has assigned your computer a single address that you always use when connecting to your network. A dynamic IP address means that each time you connect, a new number is generated and refreshed. This makes it easier to connect to the internet with less set-up, and also makes it easier for guests to use your wireless internet. This type of IP is assigned using what is known as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, or DHCP. When you experience an IP conflict, this means that more than one machine is trying to connect to the network using the same IP address. This may mean that the DHCP assigned the same temporary number to multiple computers on the network, or that the ISP mistakenly assigned multiple computers with the same static IP. It can also mean that the DHCP generated a random IP address identical to that static IP of another computer on the network. Regardless of the cause, addressing an IP conflict is easy.

1. If you have a static IP, check to make sure the addresses of multiple machines are not the same. To view your computers IP address, click Start > Run and enter chp and then ipconfig (without the quotation marks) to see the address of that individual computer.

2. If you have DHCP (randomly generated IP addresses), release your temporary IP address for a fresh one by clicking Start > Run. In the subsequent boxes that appear, type ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew (also without the quotation marks).
