Driver Incompatibility and How To Repair It
Device drivers are programs that allow the hardware you install on your computer (such devices as scanners, sound cards, disc drives, etc.) to communicate with the operating system on how to work together. Drivers are frequently updated by manufacturers to improve performance and security, so with so many devices and so many drivers communicating with them, it is not uncommon to develop incompatibility between a driver and its device, or between two drivers that may cause problems when running together. Driver incompatibility is easily fixed by rolling one or more drivers back to a previous version or by updating these drivers to the newest version available from the device's manufacturer. You can also use Windows System Restore to rollback system configuration to a date before the problem arose, but this is not the best choice.
To return to a previous version of the driver:
1. Click Start
2. Go into the Control Panel
3. Under Performance and Maintenance, click System
4. Choose the tab that says Hardware and then click the Device Manager
5. Right click the device you are looking for and select Properties.
6. Choose the Driver tab and then Roll Back Driver
7. Restart your computer
To update to a newer version of the driver:
1. Visit the device manufacturer's website and download the most recent driver for your device and Windows version.
2. Access the Device Manager using steps 1-5 above
3. Choose the Driver tab and then Uninstall the old driver
4. Use the Driver Wizard to install the new driver you have downloaded (or the original driver from the CD that came with your hardware)
5. Restart your PC One of these two courses of action should allow you to use your computer just as you did before the driver incompatibility arose. If your driver was incompatible with your device, you should now have a newer driver that works. If it was outdated and was conflicting with another driver, they should now be updated (or rolled back) to a state of compatibility once again. If all else fails, use System Restore to roll your computer back to a time before the conflict arose.
